Michael A. Baumann

Michael Baumann is a well respected author and expert on the Iraq War. Michael's major work includes writing the book, Adjust Fire: Transforming to Win in Iraq. As a U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, Baumann commanded TF 1-21 of 5th Brigade Combat Team (BCT), First Cavalry Division fighting in Baghdad, Iraq 2004-2005. His book chronicles the work to transform an Army Field Artillery rocket battalion into a motorized Infantry battalion that operated as a maneuver unit of a brigade combat team. The story unfolds explaining the challenges of a rapid re-training regimen, then walks readers through the multiple artillery, mortar, chemical response and infantry counter-insrugency mission demands handled by the Task Force. Like many other units, TF 1-21 was under-equipped to deal with the threat's presented, and the price was paid in blood. TF 1-21 had the first soldier in the First Cavalry Division during Operation Iraqi Freedom to earn a Silver Star for heroism in combat action; the story is amazing.  Read about the difficlties and obstacles of the team effort to save one Iraqi interpreter by getting him out of Iraq and to the USA. Follow the actions of the battalion for the year they fought in Iraq.
